10 Most Controversial Gaming Moments Of 2014 (So Far)

7. No Playable Female Characters In Assassin's Creed: Unity

Assassinscreedunity Assassin's Creed fans were excited to learn that the latest in the franchise, Unity, would be the first in the series to feature four-player co-op in its campaign. The historical action-adventure title will take place in Paris during the French Revolution, and follows a group of assassins as they attempt to expose the powers behind the Revolution. Controversy ensued following the co-op announcement though, after it was revealed that there would be no playable female characters. The controversy wasn't so much due to this revelation, but because of Ubisoft's reasoning behind the decision. The developer claimed that featuring female characters would require "double the animations, it's double the voices, all that stuff and double the visual assets." The statement resulted in a sizeable backlash, with many criticising the wording that implied men were the starting point, with females as a disposable afterthought.
