10 Controversial Video Game Levels That Were Completely Misunderstood
2. The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time - The Fire Temple
Nearly twenty years after release, the Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time is still credited as one of the best games ever made; that's just how good it is. It has had its fair share of controversy down the line though and we're not talking about the infamous Water Temple. Several versions of the original Nintendo 64 cartridge were released with a variety of small in-game changes added, such as Ganondorf's blood being changed from red to green. One seemingly minor change had huge implications though. The controversy stems from one of the game's many dungeons - the Fire Temple. Interestingly, it actually has nothing to do with the level itself. Instead, the musical score used to soundtrack the dungeon allegedly contained a Muslim Prayer. Later versions of the game removed this chant from the score; a Gerudo symbol found on various blocks and switches throughout the game (as well as the Mirror Shield) was also removed due to similarities with an Islamic icon. Obviously, this was a completely unintentional mistake on Nintendo's behalf. Instead, the Fire Temple's score was derived from a library of commercially available clips; when the score was being created, the clip was used entirely innocently. Many had believed that outcry from various Muslim groups forced Nintendo into removing the clip from the game; in actual fact, Nintendo removed it as soon as they aware so they could adhere to their own policy of not including religious material in their games, making any controversy caused by the inclusion of the chant a complete accident and one that was seemingly easy to fix.
I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
