10 Controversial Video Game Levels That Were Completely Misunderstood
10. Tomb Raider - Lara's First Kill
Square Enix's reboot of the Tomb Raider series saw them return to the character's roots and introduce us to a younger, less experienced Lara Croft. This allowed us to see some amazingly emotional moments for the character, such as the first time she's forced to kill a man to save herself. Unfortunately, this moment was overshadowed somewhat by allegations that the man Lara kills was attempting to sexually assault her, leading many to believe that the game featured attempted rape. Amazingly, much of the controversy stems from Square Enix itself. Executive producer Ron Rosenberg was interviewed by Kotaku prior to the game's release and he stated that Lara "gets taken prisoner by scavengers on the island. They try to rape her...". It didn't help that a trailer released for the game seemed to show a scene where Lara was moments away from being sexually assaulted. Thankfully, the trailer had been poorly edited and took the scene completely out-of-context; instead of focusing on Lara's reactions and the aftermath of the scene (which was the entire point of the game, really), it focused on the man's actions which gave the illusion that the scene was focused on an attempted rape. In actuality, the scene is about Lara being put in a threatening position and how she's forced to react violently to save her own life. While there is a dramatic tone to the event and the game in general, sexual assault is never featured; appropriately so, as the game successfully manages to create an emotional attachment between Lara and the player without having to resort to such extreme measures.
I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
