10 Controversial Video Game Levels That Were Completely Misunderstood
8. Resistance: Fall Of Man - Manchester, England
Way back in 2006/07, Resistance: Fall Of Man launched with the PS3 and was arguably the pick of the bunch in terms of launch titles. It was set in an alternate 1951 which saw a mysterious alien-race invade Britain after the Second World War. Interestingly, as the game is set in Britain, every level is based off of a real-life location, though this actually got Insomniac Games in some legal trouble with the Church Of England, quite bizarrely. The third level of the game is set in Manchester and features interior and exterior shots of Manchester Cathedral, including gun battles within the Cathedral itself. The Church Of England was not happy about the Cathedral's inclusion in the game, especially due to the work undertaken by groups involved with the Cathedral in preventing gun violence within Manchester. Really though, Sony's response to the outcry was pretty fair. They stated that the Manchester Cathedral used within Resistence wasn't intended to be a perfect recreation of the real-life place of worship and that historic buildings are used throughout various entertainment products. Of course, "it's only a game" isn't a great excuse but you can see where they're coming from; it's hardly the most realistic game out there, after all. Perhaps it was ill-advised of Insomniac to include the Cathedral in the level but it wasn't done to cause offence and it was one of the more significant moments within the game; at the very least, it was handled respectfully.
I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
