10 Controversial Video Games Everybody Totally Misunderstood

2. Grand Theft Auto V - Trevor's Torture Scene Was Supposed To Be Fun

GTA Torture
Rockstar Games

Another one that's really too brazen for its own good, Trevor's torture scene in GTA V was more cack-handed than a sewage worker who's dropped his watch. Rockstar came across as a group of multi-millionaires trying desperately to court controversy for the sake of it, but that said - there's a bit more going on than just overindulgent violence.

Rockstar were intentionally drawing comparisons to the American military's well-documented use of torture techniques to gain confessions and information, a point that gets lost when the mission gets finished regardless, your victim sputtering out a brief description of a target that gets taken out by some candid American officials. Following this mission the world just keeps on turning, as Trevor certainly doesn't care about what he's involved in, and despite the person you're torturing being taken to an airport, there's no mention whatsoever of their survival for the rest of the game.

With all that said though, the general reception of such an immaturely framed scene completely centred around the aesthetics of torture, as oppose to the reasoning behind it - even if was done poorly.
