10 Controversial Video Games That Caused Major Moral Panic

4. Postal 2 (2003)

Postal 2: Apocalypse Weekend Extremely graphic first person shooter and follow up to Postal (1997), Postal 2 was lambasted by the censors and moral guardians for its violence and stereotyping. Basically, you are Postal Dude, you live in your trailer with your nagging wife. Every day you are given tasks to do - mundane ones, such as getting milk. You can achieve these tasks as violently or peacefully as you wish. Postal Dude is under extreme provocation from characters in the game and you can either keep your cool or waste them. On Friday the apocalypse happens and everyone is running wild, but Postal Dude goes back to his trailer, argues with wifey and then we hear a gun shot and the game is over. The developers of the game defended themselves against protests that the game was too violent by saying it was up to the player how much violence they chose in the game - it could be a peaceful run. The New Zealand censors were fairly disgusted by the game - especially when Postal Dude is given the option to urinate on dead terrorists' bodies. The game was banned and buying it, distributing it or selling it can give you a massive fine or up to 10 years in jail. Australia banned the game for "excessive abhorrent content" and this was followed by bans in Germany, France and briefly Sweden. However the bans were later rescinded when the game was released worldwide through GOG.com in 2009.
