10 Controversial Video Games That Caused Major Moral Panic

2. RapeLay (2006)

rapelay A rather disturbing little game from our Nippon pals, RapeLay has been the subject of many bannings and controversy over the globe. It features a fairly odious concept. The player is a chikan (street groper) called Kimura Masaya. He stalks and rapes the Kiryuu family - a mother and her two daughters. The player can choose from a list of sexual positions - woman on top, forced fellatio and threesomes. After completing the dirty deed, the game has a number of play options. Probably the most repulsive mode is five player mode in which the player is restricted to one sexual position as three other males gang rape a woman. Lovely stuff. The first and only game to be banned in Argentina, Rapelay has caused global controversy. British MP Keith Vaz expressed his horror that such a game could be sold on Amazon and he used it as an example of why video games need tighter regulation in the UK. Enough people were sufficiently disgusted by the game to write to Illusion (the company that produced the game) and the Japanese PM took notice. The game has been placed under strict regulation by ECOS (Ethics Organisation of Computer Software) and is virtually unobtainable. It is also banned in Malaysia and Thailand.
