When Elder Scrolls Online was first announced, a lot of fans of the traditionally single-player games felt let down. For years they'd been asking for multiplayer Elder Scrolls, and when developer Bethesda Softworks finally delivered, it was underwhelming, to say the least.

The game just looked as generic as an MMO can get and nothing like a traditional Elder Scrolls game. Before launch the developers sought to please fans as much as possible, adding in a first-person mode - the way most people play these games - but it wasn't enough.

For fans of Elder Scrolls lore, it was an even bigger disappointment, taking one of the weirdest and most unique settings in gaming and making a straightforward good vs. evil fantasy story.

Fortunately, MMOs are one of the few genres where developers can respond to fans. Through updates and expansions, Elder Scrolls Online has become not only one of the most accessible, yet vast, games in the genre, but it has also explored deep corners of the lore that the main series has barely mentioned in passing.

For any fan of the series, it's almost a must-play in 2022. It's hard to imagine ever getting to explore this world this deeply again.
