No you did not misread that, and you wish I was kidding.

One of the things that makes Nintendo so unique in the modern gaming market is that they didn't start as a gaming company first. They were originally a playing card company.

Before Gunpei Yokoi came along with his marvelous toy idea "The Ultra Arm", thus setting the course that would lead them to the NES, Nintendo tried their hand at... other business ventures, none of which worked out.

These included a taxi firm, packages of instant rice, and of course, love hotels.

Love hotels, for the uninitiated, are an often Japan-specific type of hotel meant exclusively for one night stands, or at their most tame, a super cheap rest stop for business folk on the go. Unsurprisingly, they usually cater to men who require both these things at the same time.

Love hotels are still around, but Nintendo has obviously done everything it can to erase the memory of this failed business venture from history. That makes sense - not only does it interfere with their brand, but if all the things to associate with Mario, a very real love hotel is not one of them.
