10 Craziest Unique Religions In Video Games
7. The Church of Yevon (Final Fantasy X)
Any time you see a religion in a JRPG, you can be sure of two things:
1) They will be responsible for everything wrong in the world.
2) You are absolutely going to have to fight their god.
Final Fantasy X adheres to this time-honoured tradition with the Church of Yevon - an evil religion whose followers are tasked with killing a giant immortal whale named Sin that's been terrorising their world for a thousand years. (One of the more grounded Final Fantasy storylines, then).
The Church doesn't make it easy for its followers, however, as it also bans the use of technology. Their argument is that Sin is society's punishment for embracing technology centuries ago, and that only through faith can mankind be redeemed.
Which turns out to be a load of codswallop as the Church's god - Yevon himself - was the one who created Sin years ago, and is now an insane immortal wizard trapped in a cycle of perpetually summoning his greatest mistake. Naturally, the Church of Yevon goes to great lengths to cover this up.
After all, if people gift you unlimited power and money to make a problem go away, what reason do you have to ever provide a solution?
