With all their family friendly titles, Nintendo are the least likely company you’d expect to include sinister secrets in their games. However, as this list will show, this is far from the case.

Game Boy players discovered this the hard way in 1998 when the Game Boy Camera hit the market. Long before the days of the Kinnect and EyeToy, this little accessory plugged straight into the cartridge slot and let users snap, edit, and save photographs of themselves. The pictures could even be printed if you also happened to own the Game Boy Printer.

The peripheral also came with a selection of mini games, too. And here’s where things get strange.

When the player selects the “Run” option during one of these games, the system will sometimes freeze before depicting one of several strange faces accompanied by messages reading “Who are you running from?” and “Don’t be so silly!”.

While it’s likely these images were meant as a bit of harmless fun, the unnerving music that accompanies them ensured that these low-res faces would forever be engrained in Game Boy owners’ nightmares.

On a happier note, if players pressed the B button during the credits, they could see Miyamoto dancing to reggae music
