10 Criminally Underrated Comic Book Video Games You Must Play

5. Batman Vengeance

I've already spoken about how great Batman Vengeance is in an article a while back, but it deserves mentioning again because - hoo-boy - it's still really overlooked.

Vengeance is another Ubisoft Bat-title and one that also follows on from Batman: The Animated Series. It's effectively a 'lost' episode, with the game's style and presentation mirroring BTAS' near enough perfectly. All the usual suspects are there as far as the cast's concerned, with Kevin Conroy and Tara Strong reprising their roles as Batman and Batgirl respectively. Mark Hamill, Arleen Sorkin and Bob Hastings also return to voice Joker, Harley Quinn and Commissioner Gordon.

The gameplay is pretty decent, but it's the story and presentation where Vengeance really shines through. It features a bombshell opening and an eerie tone throughout, but the cherry on top is that each level comes with its own title card, just like the animated series itself.

That isn't to say the gameplay is forgettable or anything either. Combat and navigation is fun and intuitive, and Ubisoft went to great lengths to grant players access to the Dark Knight's entire arsenal, featuring an assortment of gadgets to play with. Even the Batmobile and Batwing make appearances!

It's nowhere near as definitive as Arkham, but players won't find a better game based on BTAS than Ubisoft's criminally overlooked title.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
