10 Cruel Tricks Video Games Played On FPS Players
4. Giving You An Impossible Objective - Halo: Reach
There's a basic expectation that you'll actually be able to complete any objective an FPS game throws up on your HUD, but at the end of Halo: Reach, that's sadly not the case.
The mission, "Lone Wolf," sees protagonist Noble Six taking a badass last stand against the Covenant. As the action kicks off, a single word appears as your objective: "Survive."
While on an initial playthrough you'll probably assume that Six is able to somehow withstand the relentless Covenant onslaught, that's not true at all. Story-wise you're simply distracting the Covenant long enough for the Pillar of Autumn to escape, setting up the events of the original Halo game.
And no matter how brilliant a Halo player you are, you'll eventually be overwhelmed by the might of the Covenant horde, ending the game on a deeply bittersweet note.
Yet by making the player think there might be a way to win this engagement, it ensures they don't just put the controller down and let fate take over. Clever, but cruel.
