As much as Dark Souls fans love to call the series "tough but fair," to more casual players the franchise is basically a cruel trick in of itself.

Hidetaka Miyazaki's penchant for punishing his own customers is perhaps no more evident than in the first Dark Souls, where he originally recommended that players pick the mysterious Pendant as one of their starter items.

This prompted intense fan speculation as to the Pendant's true nature, no matter that its description simply read, "No effect, but fond memories comfort travelers."

But a year later, Miyazaki finally came clean and revealed that he'd actually been pranking players the entire time, because the Pendant is indeed totally useless and offers no gameplay advantage whatsoever.

In fact, Miyazaki admitted that he schemed to intentionally mislead players by directing them away from other starter items that were actually useful for the gruelling fight ahead.

By cryptically suggesting that players pick the Pendant for their own good, with the implication that it'd be majorly advantageous, Miyazaki was quite literally making the game harder for the many players who listened to him. What a troll.
