10 Cult Classic Video Games That Need Remakes
4. Viewtiful Joe
Released in 2003 for the Nintendo Gamecube and Playstation 2, side-scrolling beat-em-up Viewtiful Joe received both critical and commercial success and looked to be on the way to becoming another successful franchise for behemoth publishers Capcom.
The cel-shaded action beat-em-up was developed in-house by staff that would later go on to form PlatinumGames and showcases the fast-paced challenging action that would go on to become a staple of the studio.
Featuring fast-paced and challenging combat across a number of 2D side scrolling stages, Viewtiful Joe would quickly receive a sequel that was again well received by critics. However, as quickly as the series had risen to prominence it had faded back into obscurity as plans for a third game were axed in 2006 and the original developers were dissolved in 2007.
Former lead director Hideki Kamiya, who helped found PlatinumGames, has expressed an interest in revisiting the series, the rights to which still reside with Capcom.
With the resurgence in side-scrolling games and brutally-challenging titles in recent years, now may be as good a time as any for Capcom to dust off the series and what better place to start than right back at the beginning.
