10 Darkest Bad Endings In Video Games

These horrible endings will make you regret doing an evil playthrough!

It is a time-honoured tradition for video games to come with an array of endings that change depending on your choices. If you play the game nicely, helping people, making the morally right choices, and generally playing positively, then you deserve an ending befitting of that. On the flipside of that coin, if you play like a wild lunatic causing mayhem and making all the evil choices, then you want an ending that reflects that, too. It's the balance that makes gaming so damn fun.

This has, naturally, led to the existence of the infamous "Bad Ending," an outcome that brutally concludes the story, often punishing the player for their actions or plunging the world itself into darkness. There have been many notable examples of this throughout the years, but some are more horrifying than others.

The following ten games have "Bad Endings" so bleak, vile, and depressing you end up reeling. Some leave you in tears, others leave you feeling like a monster, but no matter what, they show that devs love to imagine just how bad things can get.

10. The "Positive" Ending (S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl)

Heavy Rain
GSC Game World

The adage "be careful what you wish for" is intended to highlight the unexpected dangers of ambition. But if you've played S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl, you'll know it can be a lot more literal than that.

This FPS puts you in the shoes of The Marked One, a man surviving within The Zone, a forbidden area surrounding the Chernobyl Power Plant. Thankfully for him, this bleak place has hope in the form of a strange monolith known as the Wish Granter, which can - as you can presume - grant you a wish. Choosing to take said wish, however, is a double-edged sword as it will lead you to one of the game's false endings, none of which are good.

The Wish Granter takes a page from the infamous Monkey's Paw trope, granting your wish in a tainted way. Wish for immortality, and you'll be turned into a statue. Wish for gold, and you'll be crushed by it. However, the most ironically twisted of them all is the "Positive" ending.

In this ending, you wish for The Zone to disappear. However, when you open your eyes, you discover that you've been blinded, making The Zone disappear as requested, but only for you. This horrifying ending leaves you wishing you'd been more careful.
