3. Mario - Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood

Our hero Ezio was already having not such a great run with the longevity of his family members.

Very early on in Assassin’s Creed 2, his family is betrayed by Uberto Alberti, resulting in an absolutely brutal public hanging of Ezio’s father and two brothers, one of whom is only a child. Ezio rushes to their rescue but only reaches them in time to see their final moments before being forced to flee without the opportunity to stick a bunch of them with your hidden blade.

It’s a horrible moment that makes us absolutely hurt for Ezio and is entirely dedicated to seeking vengeance, but then comes Brotherhood.

In the beginning of the game Ezio has escaped Rome with his uncle Mario. Upon arriving home he’s warned that leaving the now Pope, Rodrigo Borgia, alive was a pretty poor call. Turns out that was correct as the next morning the town is attacked by his son Cesare Borgia and Ezio’s uncle Mario is slain before his eyes.

The entire event is super sudden and unexpected but I guess the Auditore’s just can’t catch a break.
