Rockstar's output has been nothing short of monolithic, to say the least. Essentially going through their teenage punk rock phase with the earlier Grand Theft Autos, we saw a phenomenal step up into releasing new IPs and passion-filled experiments in the 2000s.
GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas led into Manhunt, The Warriors - the generation-defining Bully. Even smaller franchises Smuggler's Run and Midnight Club were used to perfect tight driving mechanics and open-world traversal respectively, before feeding that data back into GTA, making GTA IV and especially V, something truly special.
Now, GTA Online rakes in around $5 million a day from DLC and microtransactions, yet they come alongside a free base game - one stuffed with multiplayer modes, customisable homesteads and high-octane cop chases.
What was once a hungry, ambitious studio has blossomed and flexed into a genuine entertainment powerhouse. The world waits with baited breath to see how Red Dead Redemption 2 will turn out, but chances are... it'll be fantastic.
