10 Disastrous Video Games That Lost Their Creators Millions

8. Uru: Ages Beyond Myst

Myst and its sequel Riven were a couple of the most loved puzzle games of all time. But after the turn of the millennium, it was clear that pre-rendered graphics just wouldn't cut it any more, so Ubisoft decided to overhaul the series and bring it into the third-person, real-time style that was all the rage in 2003. Sadly, the game's $12 million budget was never to be recouped. Despite being well received, Uru sold poorly, perhaps due to the boom of violent, action-oriented video games at the time. The highly anticipated multiplayer component was also dropped, leaving many people feeling that Uru wasn't the full product that was initially promised. Uru's development cost more than its three predecessors combined, but it failed to sell as well as any of them, leaving developer Cyan Worlds to nearly go bankrupt as a result.
