10 Divisive Video Games That Are Secretly The Best Entry
2. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus
Wolfenstein's second rebooted instalment has the weirdest reputation, in that for every person you find who adored it (like me), there are three more who can't put their finger on what felt "off".
And although I can totally concede that the game failed when it came to managing difficulty (just knock it down and enjoy what's here instead), there are so many high points throughout that made this a phenomenal ride from start to finish.
First up, it's absolutely stunning. Everything from character models to barrel explosions look stunning and really leap off the screen, but then you have the buildup and payoff of BJ Blazkowicz going from a down n' out wheelchair-bound soldier, to receiving a super suit of armour for the game's second half.
A notably bold script delves into how a Nazi-ruled America would force people to take sides, exposing ugly truths and comparisons with how white supremacists would be more than okay with that version of history.
Pulse-pounding gameplay, another beast of a Mick Gordon score, one of the best uses of Hitler - and an accompanying achievement - you've ever seen, and a perfectly-paced narrative that hits every beat with supreme confidence.
I never got the dislike of The New Colossus, and to me it's excellent from front to back.
