The story of Final Fantasy XIV's rise from the ashes is so interesting that it would be a sin not to add it to this list. The key to its success was not so much its first DLC as the man behind it.

Although nowadays Final Fantasy XIV is a massive hit with a player base of over 42 million people, at the time of its launch in 2010, the game was deemed a commercial failure. It received heavy criticism just hours after it went online, and Square Enix was forced to temporarily shut down the servers to deal with game-breaking bugs. At some point, the studio scrapped the entire dev team behind the title and replaced them with new programmers under the management of the legendary Naoki Yoshida, also known as Yoshi-P.

Yoshi-P redefined Final Fantasy XIV. With genuine passion for the project and a unique vision for its future, he changed the game from the ground up. Its first DLC, A Realm Reborn, is the culmination of Yoshi-P's efforts. The expansion is a complete reimagination of Final Fantasy XIV and marks an important moment in which the title turned from a colossal failure into an international success.
