10 Earth-Shattering Video Game Plot Twists You Didn't See Coming
4. The Gods Are Fake - Pillars Of Eternity
As a spiritual successor to the much loved Dungeons & Dragons Infinity Engine games, Pillars of Eternity faced many expectations, not least of which was the inclusion of a diverse and powerful pantheon. After all, gods meddling in mortal affairs is fertile story material.
And Pillars did not disappoint. You have the Hollowborn Plague, a curse attributed to the retribution of the god, Eothas; a shadowy organization centred around the worship of the exiled Woedica; and the obligatory unspeakable rituals, performed in the name of the evil Skaen.
So it comes as a big surprise when the question that drives the plot is ‘Are the Gods real?,’ and a proper eye-popper when the answer is a definitive ‘no.’ Instead, it is revealed that in the ancient past no gods existed. Afraid that this knowledge would lead to anarchy the Engwithans manufactured gods by fusing their own souls into magical constructs. The gods, are frauds. But, to add paradox to twist, they can still ruin you day.
Pulling this kind of shocking and subtle reveal is pure Obsidian, a clever subversion of expectation that, like all great twists do, sticks in your mind long afterwards.
