9. Don't Justify Games - Just Play Them

533 I will readily admit that games have come on in leaps and bounds in terms of context and themes. Nobody who plays video games would claim that the Mass Effect series is a shallow exercise in trying to get into aliens' pants. However, it is easy to get too caught up in defending what you consider to be a brilliant piece of storytelling to others who may not be as immersed in the universe as your good self. So when your girlfriend claims your travels into Vampire: the Masquerade are just to hook up with slutty vampiresses, do not get all defensive and claim that "actually it's a game that looks at multiple themes, such as the agony of immortality and the politicking of a Machievellian hidden society..."etc, etc. This only makes you (and the game by extension) look pompous and false for trying so hard to legitimise the game by condescending to your girlfriend. In other words, by saying this, what you've actually said is "actually this game is actually way deeper than that, but it doesn't surprise me that you don't understand". Instead, point out to your girlfriend that she might like the game if she was to give it a go and it's quite fun. If she still refuses, then leave it go. It's her opinion after all. Alternatively if you don't think she would like the game, then tell her that you understand that this isn't her cup of tea because of the violence and overt sexuality (we're still on the Bloodlines hypothetical) but it still has a great story. And speaking of being defensive and violence...
