10 Emotionally Intense Video Game Moments You Weren't Ready For

2. Gregory's Death - What Remains Of Edith Finch

What Remains Of Edith Finch
Giant Sparrow

None are safe from Giant Sparrow's exploration of what it means to truly live.

Spread across a series of characters all meeting their maker in variety of haphazard ways, eventually you're told the story of Gregory; a small infant child who when gameplay resumes, sees you playing happily in a bathtub.

"Surely they're not going to kill a kid?!" you think... but they do.

The thing that'll really get you is Giant Sparrow's takeaway message being that because Gregory was happy as he passed, maybe that's enough.

Maybe that's all we need in life, and What Remains of Edith Finch is loaded with a throughline of "Life is worth living, if you enjoy yourself". A sobering, cerebrally affecting sentiment that propelled this to be many peoples' best story of 2017.
