10 Essential 2015 Video Games You Can Already Own

1. Sunless Sea

Not just contender for best release of the year so far, Sunless Sea is also one of the weirdest. The game takes place in 'Fallen London' and surrounding areas, a huge subterranean ocean that England's capital has mysteriously fallen into. There's a whole lot of bizarre characters and plot to sink your teeth into, as you sail around the 'zee' as a plucky captain with your crew. From a top-down perspective, you're entirely free to explore the world as you wish, whether that's hunting zee monsters, trading illegal goods, or just sending port reports to the admiral. Brilliantly, the game is heavily influenced by the roguelike genre, meaning when you die, you'll need to start a new game, with a semi-randomised map. It makes journeying out from safety even more nerve-wracking, with the constant danger of running out of fuel or supplies. Anyone that enjoys Lovecraftian horror will be right at home in Sunless Sea, with its often terrifying encounters and ever-present sense of dread. What's your favourite release of 2015 so far?
