10 Essential Dungeons And Dragons Video Games For Hardcore Fans

Dungeons and Dragons has been going for 46 years now, yes, that's right, 46! And while we all love our tabletop sessions and I'm sure everyone is excited for the new 5e book Mythic Odysseys of Theros, sometimes you want another format for your epic adventures. It might be because you've played through every written adventure, you don't have a big enough group of reliable players, or you just want to see what else D&D has to offer. Regardless of the reason, there are a whole host of Dungeons and Dragons games out there, some from decades past, and they're just waiting for you to go out and find them.

But with such a popular franchise, and so many absolute atrocities out there, it can be difficult to decipher the must-plays from the no-ways. This list will break down the best D&D titles which video games have to offer. As many of these games have sequels which are often just as good, I'll be counting these as one game, otherwise certain franchises would completely dominate this list, so keep that in mind.

So, grab your weapon of warning, your bag of holding, and make sure you have fireball prepared, and let's launch into the world of Dungeons and Dragons.

Now, while this might not exactly be an official D&D game, it’s one that everyone knows well. Being the only title on this list claiming no connection with Dungeons and Dragons, this is a bit of a controversial pick, but hear me out. The Dragon Age games utilises so many features that any seasoned D&D player, or even somebody who has just made their first character sheet, can see.

Origins definitely stands out for me as doing this the most in the franchise but all of the games are guilty of it, from the specialisations each class gets, to the proficiencies in things like armour and certain weapons, to even the stat system. The six stats you get in game are reminiscent of those in D&D, just swap out Magic for Intelligence, Cunning for Charisma and Willpower for Wisdom and you’re there! You even start with a base of 10, not so common in 5e but definitely something older players will recognise.

Despite perhaps being some of the best and most well received games on this list, the point yet remains that this isn’t an official D&D title, so while I definitely recommend you go and play them, I have to rank Dragon Age at last place.
