10 Exact Moments Video Games Stopped Trying
3. Stripping Back The Content - Mario Kart 7
The Mario Kart games released for the Nintendo DS and Wii were two of the hottest games ever released during their heyday, racking up nearly sixty-five million sales between them over the years. For their new 3DS handheld, Nintendo thought to themselves: 'I'll just do it again!' and released easily the most sparse game in terms of content for the series to date.
Mario Kart 7 was advertised as being something completely new for fans of Mario Kart, introducing a couple of new mechanics such as underwater driving, gliding and an underwhelming kart customisation feature.
However, these new features didn't cover up just how little Nintendo were trying when it came to pretty much everything else in the game. Obviously a handheld doesn't have the same capabilities as a console like the Wii, but even comparing Mario Kart 7 to its DS counterpart shows how slim it is on the content.
The VS and Mission modes from the DS game have both been removed completely, the three new items of Lucky Seven, Super Leaf and Power Flower are some of the most unoriginal in the franchise, and even the character roster reeks of a lack of trying. The likes of Waluigi are no longer present in the game, and characters like Metal Mario and Lakitu are just blatant reskins of existing character models.
