8. Ten Consoles - $200
This has proved to be the most popular launch price point for previous new consoles as no fewer than ten have launched at the sweet $200 mark. Consoles loved and loathed at this price include Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, GameCube, SNES, NES TurboGrafX 16, Master System, Vectrex, Magnavox Odyssey and Atari 2600. The popular and well documented history of the N64, Dreamcast, GameCube, SNES, NES and Master System need not be treaded again by me, but instead I want to look at the oddities of this group. The Vectrex was released in 1982 that was a console that came with its own screen. The console was unfortunately released just before the video game crash of 1983 so it failed to perform as expected. It the short space of time it managed to build an impressive back catalogue of games and had a comfortable controller. The Vectrex was sure to make its mark in the gaming world if it wasn't for the bad timing; however it still has a small active fan base that cherishes the original console and appreciate all it has to offer.
Inflation Price: $468 The Magnavox Odyssey was the world's first home console available commercially. Battery powered and released in 1972, it was on the market 3 years before Pong began its journey into the record books. The console suffered from a terrible marketing campaign that seen it only shift 330,000 units, but it did manage to have many successful court cases against Atari and other consoles after it for stealing their ideas. It was also known as the PC Engine and was a graphical powerhouse of the late 80s and actually managed to outsell Sega in Japan. Despite the lack of third party support, the console fared well and is remembered fondly as being good for its time. You can find some of the better known titles on the Wii Virtual console and PlayStation Network, which is a decent legacy for a console that only had one controller port.
