10 Most Expensive Video Games Of All Time

9. Red Dead Redemption - $100 Million

As you may have guessed, the name Rockstar Games is going to be regular feature on this list. It's an indication of their willingness to shovel great big piles of money into game development, and most of the time their investments have seen substantial returns. Red Dead Redemption was a particularly important release for parent company Take-Two Interactive - this was first time since 2000 that the yearly financials showed a profit without a GTA release to pull in the cash. It wasn't an easy task though. The gaming press was awash with reports of empoyee abuse over at developer Rockstar San Diego - harsh working conditions, unfair pressure on staff without suitable salary adjustments to make it worth their extra effort - especially as the development process reached the frantic crunch time leading up to release. An incredibly big production, spanning from 2005 to 2010, with hundreds of staff having a hand in it over the years, Red Dead Redemption was estimated to have set the publisher back around $100 million. That's a sizeable investment, but the sales figures whistle a happy tune. By 2012 the open-world Western epic had shifted 13 million copies, and had filled the Rockstar trophy cabinet with awards and accolades from every corner of the industry.

Game-obsessed since the moment I could twiddle both thumbs independently. Equally enthralled by all the genres of music that your parents warned you about.
