2. Metal Gear Solid - Psycho Mantis' Tricky Ways
If you played through Metal Gear Solid for the PlayStation chances are high you remember your battle with Psycho Mantis quite vividly. Facing off against the creepy telepathic proved to be one of the greatest boss fights in Solid Snake's adventures, and among gaming as well. As we feebly attempted to defeat him, there was a certain feeling it was nothing quite like before. A certain feeling of uneasiness swept over us as we watched Meryl press us with her sexuality. MGS offered a boss encounter that broke what we thought we knew about gameplay, and dug deep inside the mind, in order to create a truly unique experience. Psycho Mantis gave off a demonstration that broke the fourth wall. Players were told to place their controller on the floor which resulted in Mantis using his powers to move your controller. Then, he read your past by reading your memory card and past games played. Finally, he reflected on your playthrough to reveal what type of person you really were. At the time of release, there was nothing quite like this around, and it has stuck with us since. Even combat offered up a trick similar to a title discussed earlier (Eternal Darkness), during the boss fight the screen would go blank with "Hideo", written in the corner. Mantis would "read your mind" as you ran around the office which made your attacks ineffective. Luckily, there was a solution, and once that "Ah-Ha!" moment flashed in our minds, we knew the designers had accomplished something special.
