10 Failed Xbox 360 Games That Became Cult Classics

4. NieR

Brutal Legend
Cavia

NieR is a spin-off of the Drakengard franchise, and centres around the fifth ending of the original game. If you didn't understand that sentence, you're probably not shocked to learn the game flopped big-time.

It didn't help NieR went by different titles, based on location and the system it was on. The PS3 version was called NieR Replicant in Japan, while the Xbox 360 port was NieR Gestalt. The whole situation is so unnecessarily confusing, the studio behind it shouldn't have been surprised when NieR didn't get NieR its sales quota. (See what I did there?)

But NieR made juuuuuuust enough to warrant a sequel. And thank the gaming gods it did, since NieR Automata is a frickin' masterpiece. Not only did the follow-up spawn DLCs and crossovers, it encouraged gamers to check out its predecessor

As such, gamers have a newfound respect for the series as a whole, since they can appreciate the original's story, characters, and music. NieR developed such a resurgence, it recieved a remaster (although it was based on the PS3 version, not the Xbox 360 port).

Normally, it's frustrating when a great game doesn't get the praise it deserves. Fortunately, everything worked out for NieR in the long-run.
