The weird logic of the Pokemon universe, and the rather threadbare story provided by the games, have led to a whole smorgasbord of dark theories.

However, the granddaddy of them all is the 'Great Pokemon War'.

The basis for the theory comes from the original games Red and Blue (or Red and Green if you're going to be that guy) and the electric-type gym leader Lt. Surge. Surge is obviously a member of some kind of army and mentions how electric Pokemon saved him during "the war". This has led to some fans speculating that the games take place in the immediate aftermath of a catastrophic war.

It actually explains a lot about pokemon's world. Everyone is so obsessed with pokemon battles because they've grown up in a world where everyone of a certain age gets drafted, and so knowing how to fight is an essential skill. Also, with a lot of adults killed in action (explaining why there's a distinct lack of adult NPCs), children have had to step up and take on more responsibility, such as running gyms.

Plus, the need to prioritise combat explains why Kanto has super advanced healthcare facilities in every town, but absolutely no forms of entertainment.

The downside of this, is that your rival was almost definitely orphaned by the war.

And you named him "Fartz". You horrible monster.
