10. They Dedicated An Entire Year To Their Mascot's Brother

Super Mario has been Nintendo's mascot for as long as anybody can remember, that dungaree-wearing moustachioed champion of the jump. He's starred in dozens of games and spin-offs throughout the decades and his draw and appeal shows no sign of slowing down. But what about his brother?

Historically, Luigi has always lived in Mario's shadow, often relegated to the butt of jokes and lambasted for his cowardly nature. But Nintendo attempted to change all that in 2013 when they proclaimed it the Year Of Luigi, promising to celebrate the lesser brother and planning several Luigi-centric launches. Needless to say, fans were ecstatic. Mario may be the hero, but Luigi is something so much more €“ he's flawed. How can you not empathize with him? You'd be terrified too if your mansion was filled with ghosts.

As for whether or not there's any correlation between the Year Of Luigi and the $456 million yen loss Nintendo suffered that year, well, that's for you to decide...
