10 Gaming Characters Who Never Deserved To Die
9. Final Fantasy VII - Aerith
I'm just getting this one out of the way because this same game has a MUCH more depressing candidate further down the list. Over the course of events in Final Fantasy VII, your goal is to save the planet from certain destruction. Sephiroth was once the greatest SOLDIER (a group of elite, genetically enhanced soldiers), who fell into insanity after discovering what he incorrectly interpreted as his true origins. Thus, he fell into madness, and through a series of events, Cloud becomes the primary protagonist to stand against him, who feels he must, as he has a long legacy as one of the great SOLDIERs as well. Except... Cloud really isn't. His memories are actually the product of trauma, from the death of his mentor, Zack. And Aerith... happens to be Zack's girlfriend (if nothing else, she has consistent taste in men). Aerith is basically the most innocent little mage ever. She's sweet, unassuming, and basically the medic in the game, healing your dumb behind whenever you get overwhelmed from the Planet's healthy population of monsters and enemy combatants. This continues until about midway through the game, in which Aerith attempts to use a powerful form of defensive magic, Holy, to preemptively counter the ultimate offensive magic of Sephiroth's Meteor. Sephiroth obviously isn't going to tolerate that, so he manipulates the form of another monster, JENOVA (which happens to be the source of his abilities - yep, explaining this story to someone who's never played it is quite confusing), into resembling his visage, before he falls from the sky, stabbing Aerith through the torso from above.Well I mean... he wasn't going to descend majestically, just to give her a cookie.
Because this was a time when unexpected plot twists were actually UNEXPECTED, this took many gamers as a shock - Final Fantasy is a series that has a healthy amount of deaths, but it usually isn't the quiet, unassuming flower girl. Much less, mercilessly executed by the game's antagonist just when you're getting the hang of the game. Jeez square, way to be a major douche.
And worry not, FF VII will be back on this list soon. *sigh*
