10 Gaming Commandments All Modern Games Seem To Ignore

1. Women Are People, Too

Video games have been accused of being sexist for decades, be it the rape scenarios of Custer's Revenge, or the simple fact that even now, women are often reduced to sex objects, merely to be ogled by men playing the game. Lara Croft began to change everything when Tomb Raider came out, a strong, likeable female protagonist who promoted "girl power", but since, strong female protagonists have been hard to come by; Mass Effect's "Femshep" is also another great example, though there are still far too many instances of female characters simply being paraded out in barely anything for the sake of cheap titillation. It does none of us any favours and only worsens the reputation of the medium, that it is an adolescent, immature past-time. The new Tomb Raider game has promise, given how we're presented with a more realistically-proportioned Lara Croft, though much talk has been made about the story, which reportedly has Croft at one point trying to fend off a rape; whether the game veers into exploitation or not is unknown.
