10 Gaming Moments To Make You Cry

1. Aeris Dies - Final Fantasy 7

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCy1bzvr-Ro This is the worst kept spoiler in the history of video games, yet still manages to be the most affecting moment in any game, because whether you know it's coming or not, it still feels so sudden, brutal and unexpected. Aeris was the innocent flower girl we meet near the start of Final Fantasy VII, and one to whom Cloud appeared to have a simple but effective connection; what Square did here better than any of their recent games is involve us in the story and make us care for the characters. Thus, when Sephiroth shows up and mercilessly slices his blade through her, we were absolutely distraught, her sweet innocent face turning to an empty expression as she fades away. Though playing Crisis Core does add some context to these events and doesn't make them seem quite so depressing, it's still a hugely affecting moment because we've spent quite a few hours in Aeris' company and expected her to be around for the long haul, only for her to be snuffed out in an instant. There have been rumours ever since FF7's release that Aeris could be saved, but short of using an Action Replay cheat code to glitch her back to life, there's no legitimate way to do so. Shame.
