10 Gaming Opening Levels Which Surprised Us All
9. Prey (2017)
The 2017 Prey reboot kicked off with a total jaw-dropper of an opening sequence which the game's marketing had expertly concealed from unsuspecting players.
Protagonist Morgan Yu wakes up in his swanky apartment and gets ready to join a research team on the space station Talos I, but not before undergoing a series of tests - the game's tutorial, basically.
Afterwards, the personnel on the other side of the glass are mauled by the alien creatures known as the Typhon, and Morgan passes out after being exposed to a sedative gas.
He wakes up in his apartment, and though for a moment it might seem like the opening was all a dream, you're soon warned to leave the area, with the player smashing a nearby window to reveal that their apartment is actually a simulation.
In reality, Morgan isn't on Earth at all - he's already been living on Talos I for three years, and the Typhon outbreak has actually happened.
Much like Silent Hill's opening, it tinkers with layers of reality to make the player anxious and paranoid, convincing them that nothing they see should be taken for granted.
