10 Gaming Villains We Were Emotionally-Invested In Defeating
8. LeChuck (The Secret Of Monkey Island)
One great way of building a dislikable villain is to create a hero that we're immediately drawn to Monkey Island is a fantastic example of this. Guybrush Threepwood is one of gaming's most entertaining protagonists, full of wit, sarcasm and great moments. He's a character that we want to see succeed and that makes defeating LeChuck a major priority. Guybrush's quest to become a mighty pirate leads to the kidnapping of Governor Elaine Marley (who, through a chance encounter, Guybrush has fallen for) by the ghostly LeChuck and the rest of the game (and the series, actually) sees our hero attempt to rescue her. While there are villains out there with worse crime records than LeChuck (kidnapping a woman is an everyday task for some evil doers), our attachment to Guybrush makes LeChuck our sworn enemy and we'll do everything we can to see him defeated. Guybrush eventually stops LeChuck during his wedding to Elaine with a handy bottle of voodoo root beer (what else?) and they all live happily ever after. Well, until LeChuck re-emerges for the sequel anyway. Still, Guybrush's battle with LeChuck is a great example of developing interesting stories through the strength of a single character and our attachment to Guybrush makes him public enemy number one.
I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
