10 Garbage Games Everybody Bought Anyway
1. Kinect Adventures!
After seeing the success of the Nintendo Wii's motion controls, Microsoft decided to implement motion technology for the Xbox 360.
In 2010, the company released the Kinect, a motion-tracking camera which relied on gesture and voice recognition. Since the Kinect effectively made the player the controller, it sounded like a game-changer. As such, there was a ton of hype for the first game to utilise the peripheral, a sports mini-game title called Kinect Adventures!
Although the mini-games weren't great, Kinect Adventures! had a bigger issue - the tech didn't work. The Kinect ranged from being overly sensitive, not sensitive enough, imprecise, or unresponsive.
Despite being advertised as "real-time," the Kinect occasionally suffered a delayed reaction, making it impossible to perform time-sensitive motions effectively. And if clicking on an option is frustrating, you can imagine how unbearable it is to play any of these mini-games.
For all its faults, it goes without saying that Kinect Adventures! was a critical failure. However, the same cannot be said commercially. In fact, Kinect Adventures! sold a mind-boggling 24 million units, making it the most successful Xbox 360 title.
Granted, the fact it was packed with the Kinect is the main reason this clunker sold the way way it did. Nevertheless, it's bewildering to learn Kinect Adventures! outsold classics like Skyrim, Minecraft, Halo, and Call of Duty. Heck, this dumpster fire sold more than Grand Theft frickin' Auto V. Not only that, it's still in the top 50 most successful games of all time.
The moral of the story is gamers need to really really read the reviews before they purchasing things they'll quickly learn to regret.
