7. Free Movement And Aiming - Resident Evil 4
Fans of the
original Resident Evil trilogy (and prequel Resident Evil Zero) had become
accustomed to the iconic (if meme-worthy) tank controls and fixed camera angles
of the series. When 2005 came around, though, all of this changed.
This was the year that Resident Evil 4 arrived. A dramatically different experience to its predecessors, Leon’s disastrous European assignment was more TPS than survival horror.
Suddenly, our hero had a convenient laser-aiming system, allowing precise enemy weakpoints to be targeted. Movement was still a little clunky in comparison to contemporary shooters, but this level of freedom was absolutely revolutionary for the series.
Resident Evil 5 and 6 took this ball and ran with it (for better and for worse), but this critically-acclaimed title truly struck the balance very well, proving popular with old fans and new arrivals to the series alike.
