10 Great Action Video Game Franchises (That Died Too Soon)
4. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell
It’s odd to think that Splinter Cell is considered one of Ubisoft’s most popular and successful franchises, considering that we have not received a full game since 2013. That’s a long time for a publisher’s flagship series to stay silent, especially when Ubisoft release an Assassin’s Creed game every two years.
Remarkably, Splinter Cell released six main series installments in eleven years from 2002 to 2013. Influenced by the Metal Gear franchise, Splinter Cell is a stealth shooter with the player taking control of protagonist Sam Fisher, a skilled agent tasked with infiltrating various enemy strongholds. The stealth encounters in the series are unique due to its use of contrasting light and dark environments allowing the player to creatively hide and utilize night vision technology. However, despite no main game in the series being released since 2013, Ubisoft are well aware of Sam Fisher’s status. Sam Fisher makes frequent cameos in blockbuster games such as Rainbow Six: Siege and the mobile game Elite Squad. A new Splinter Cell game is coming out soon, but don’t get too excited as it is only a VR experience.
Every year fans of the series eagerly await Ubisoft’s announcement of upcoming games in the hope for a new Splinter Cell, and every year they remain disappointed. Splinter Cell missed out on an entire generation of video game consoles, so perhaps it’s time for Sam Fisher to return home.
