10 Great Video Game Franchises People Simply Abandoned
1. Splinter Cell
Before you start: yes, we know it's getting a remake.
Yet before fans knew that was coming, the series was laying very dormant from 2013's last canonical entry, Blacklist. As such, players may never see what lies in store for Fisher after stopping the Engineers.
Which is a shame as, on paper, Blacklist scored very highly on release. The stealthing was made more fluid, as was switching between that and the action sensibilities slightly overused in Conviction. It should have been what fans wanted, a hearty mix of styles to suit everyone.
But as we know, fans are fickle, and despite critical praise, it just didn't gel with the players. Perhaps Conviction's gung-ho bad taste was still lingering, or players were hoping for Chaos Theory 2, who knows...
Either way, it fell short of Ubisoft's extremely lofty sales expectations. About three million short, to be precise. Which made it a "commercial failure" to all and sundry, leaving the series stagnating for another nine years.
Let's hope this remake is that second ignition we need to bring Fisher back for more adventures, eh?
