3. The Division

Even if it didn't quite live up to the tectonic hype, The Division was nevertheless a thoroughly entertaining shared world shooter, brought to life by its gorgeous open world and tight gunplay.

Yet given that the core campaign could be cleared in around 25 hours and Ubisoft didn't have much in the way of meaningful post-game content to keep players engaged, it's little surprise that the player count dipped from a stunning 2.1 million launch peak to "just" 143,000 within three months of launch.

The Division simply didn't boast enough compelling content to keep players coming back, and the already repetitive core gameplay loop likely didn't help retention at all.

The game quickly faded into the ether, all while another Tom Clancy title released a few months prior, Rainbow Six: Siege, impressively managed to grow its player base, enough that it only reached a player peak in 2021 with an impressive 201,053.
