10 Great Video Games That Are WAY Too Long
3. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Even though The Phantom Pain was deservingly praised for its gameplay mechanics and open-world stealth systems, there's no doubt this Metal Gear entry suffers from major bloat.
The bulk of the main campaign consists of over 30 story missions, which can take 40-50 hours to complete. But when players realise these missions only make up Chapter 1, they safely assume Chapter 2 will escalate the narrative.
Instead, Chapter 2 recycles previous missions with harder modifiers. Although this chapter feels like a bonus mode, it must be beaten to access pivotal story content, including the true ending.
Look, it was acceptable when Super Mario Bros. pulled the "Play the Whole Game Again on Hard Mode" stunt in 1985. But this is the 21st century for crying out loud. Considering Metal Gear Solid is Konami's biggest property, it's insulting the company stooped this low. Despite the fact Chapter 2 isn't as long, it's not satisfying to replay the same missions for another 20 hours.
Chapter 1 is relatively long, so it would've been more sensible to add a few missions to close several character arcs and discard Chapter 2 entirely.
