10 Great Video Games That Didn't Get Good Until Halfway Through
4. Deus Ex
Deus Ex's unique style of character-building and storytelling forever changed the direction of game design for the better. It allowed players to experience a unique conspiracy theory narrative while dictating what kind of cyberwarrior badass their hero was going to be.
Well... eventually it does.
For most of the first half, Deus Ex suffers by forcing players to adopt a stealth-based style, due to their character's initial weaknesses. Building your character to really be able to perform as a hacking master or combat expert takes time, and it certainly doesn't help that the game's story up to that point is fairly standard, until a plot twist kicks in that changes everything.
While Deus Ex's slow beginning does have a higher purpose, you're forgiven for not sticking with it long enough to see what that was.
