10 Great Video Games That Didn't Get Good Until Halfway Through

5. Mafia

Deemed a GTA rip-off at the time of its release, Mafia initially struggled to separate itself from Rockstar's groundbreaking epic. That's a shame, because it really is an entirely different experience that just so happens to be one of the great crime epics in the gaming history.

That said, the game does itself no favours with an opening that takes far too long to tell players why they should care about the game at all. Mafia's initial levels focus on your character's slow journey to joining the criminal underworld, meaning that most of your time is spent driving around a taxi and running away completing various errand boy duties.

It's only after you've made it past Mafia's infamously difficult racing mission, that you finally get to the good stuff.
