After a solid first game and a disappointingly dull sequel, the Far Cry franchise finally reached its full potential with the third game, released in 2012. Though the gameplay mechanics themselves aren't hugely different, what really takes Far Cry 3 to the next level is the huge boost in personality, from the more intriguing story to the memorable and superbly-acted supporting characters. As protagonist Jason Brody must attempt to rescue his friends from pirates and escape the island, the game has us considering how savage Jason will have to become in order to save them, as we find ourselves facing off against the charismatic, psychopathic leader of the pirates, Vaas. There's not just a greater psychological component to FC3, but the entire sense of progression is vastly improved, as you slowly acquire a larger arsenal of weaponry with which to light up this huge island environment. An array of awesome vehicles, including hang gliders, buggies, jet skis and even wingsuits, add a lot of fun to traversing the environment, and in terms of the story, the introduction of visually stunning psychedelic sequences makes it considerably easier to be pulled in by the story, which they've clearly put a lot more effort into this time. Given that the fourth game, due out in a few short months, appears to feature another hugely charismatic villain, complete with open-world co-op and rideable elephants, there's every chance it'll knock FC3 off this coveted perch soon!
