10 Greatest NES Video Games Of 1985

9. Tennis

Like other Nintendo R & D sports titles, Tennis is a generic, playable number that's easy to pick up, but lacks the depth to make you want to reach for the cart time and time again. Gameplay runs smoothly throughout, and players can serve, stroke, lob, volley and smash easily enough. Beginners are protected as the characters are so fast you have time to correct any silly mistakes when getting a feel for the court.

A two-player option adds fun to the mix, but the five CPU difficulty settings will also keep you interested enough if you're playing alone. However, like Soccer reviewed elsewhere on this list, Tennis would soon enough be improved upon by superior titles for the console.

These days the game is probably best remembered for an early appearance by Mario who serves as the referee here. He really was the Dr. Sam Beckett of Nintendo back in the day! He also returned to take the high chair for the even more frenetic Gameboy version that surfaced in 1989.

Still worth a look today for a quick game or two but not good enough to make it any higher on this list...
