10 Groundbreaking Video Games That TOTALLY Missed The Mark

9. Worms 3D

Since 1995, Team 17's Worms series has been a delightfully absurd source of multiplayer madness and gut-busting slapstick combat. Traditionally, the games were 2D and animated in a caricature-esque cartoon art style. However, that all changed with the release of Worms 3D.

The 2003 instalment of the series introduced some pretty drastic alterations - most notably, its move to 3D environments. On top of that, the cartoon animation was dropped in favour of more widely used polygonal models. Although the developers may have felt like this was the next logical step for their beloved brainchild, the reality was that the iconic turn-based warfare just didn't translate well to three dimensions.

Other games such as the Playstation classic, Hogs of War, also tried this out, but the reason it's seen as a particular failing in the Worms series is because they already had a formula that worked perfectly. And in trying to allow to the franchise to evolve, it ended up devolving into little more than a pale imitation.

The one consolation is that the more recent Worms games have reverted back to the 2D style, so at least the developers are able to learn from their mistakes.
