10 Most Harrowing Decisions We Made To Progress In Video Games

10. The Original Endings - Mass Effect 3

Oh Mass Effect 3, will you ever be forgiven? No, no you will not. Even if you were one of the 'lucky' few to have all the bonus downloadable content installed on your system by the time you played through this instalment of the franchise, later revelations surrounding what appeared to be EA's grubby mitts tangling with the release schedule to withhold necessary narrative content from us gamers, makes the entire proposition inexcusable. Anyway, back to the choice, as although ME3 does have many throughout its runtime, to me the one that stuck out was (somewhat obviously) was the final one. Out of nowhere we were asked to either sacrifice ourselves to become something of a hivemind for the Reaper fleet (how exactly?), merge all living beings with synthetic lifeforms (again...what?) or again sacrifice ourselves, yet take down the Reapers alongside us. Do you remember what that feeling was like? I'm not talking about reflecting back on the other endings in a post-credits Youtube rage-haze, instead I mean that moment when the Starchild barely explains your options, before leaving you to pick one and live with it. Regardless of 'Extended Editions' of the ending, no amount of Jamaican-accented aliens could save those of us who would forever know that bottomless-pit feeling of just sitting there thinking, "Well I don't wanna make ANY of these choices". Not only because they didn't make a lick of sense, but also because we desperately wanted the prompt to appear that would allow us to kick Starchild into outer space . Harrowing in a completely different way to the rest of this list, Mass Effect 3 is still one of the most talked-about games of all time when it comes to horrible choices forced upon the player.
